A Change is Gonna Come…
It’s easy to feel like there is no end to the tragedies that seem to fill our everyday existence. In recent months, we have absorbed the horrific fire in Hawaii, the unthinkable murder in Jacksonville, the crashing helicopter, home break-ins and store robberies, and now we can’t help but be consumed by the horrors of the Israel-Hamas conflict. It just keeps coming. It puts us in a difficult space – either we become desensitized to all that is happening and just get used to kids being on lock down at school or people being gunned down at work or we grieve and mourn without ceasing about all of the suffering in our lives.
Desensitization can’t be the answer. We always have to feel and respond to support those around us and yet there is a ceiling on how much we can all take. It is no longer happening to people we don’t know. It’s all of us – it’s happening to all of us. We have to stay present to stand in the gap and support those around us.
The question we must consider is – what can we do to bring about change? While I may not have all the answers,. I do know that we have to talk. We have to hurdle our differences. We have to overcome our political division and come together around our common goal to send kids of all ages to school without worrying about having shelter in place. We all want to re-establish the safety we felt in our homes and in our stores before smash and grabs were the everyday experience. All of us want change so share your ideas. Let’s innovate. Let’s change something and see if we can’t let one thing lead to many as we recreate and co-create the community we want to be a part of.
