On April 25, 2023, Illumina announced its commitment to improve margins, which would require a reduction in staff. With a heavy heart, I announce that my role as Global Head of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion was included in those reductions. My esteemed colleague, Tracey Cooper, will remain, leading the charge and safeguarding the vital elements of the program we have built.
As I reflect upon the countless Illuminates (Illumina team members) who wholeheartedly embraced our collective mission of forging a more inclusive and equitable workplace, I am compelled to share the outcomes of our work, and I hope to encourage them to persevere and remain committed to Illumina’s DEI journey.
In just under 3 years, we built a DEI program and influenced a culture. We have deepened the integration of diversity, equity, and inclusion into our business with our relentless push to diversify the genomic datasets through many partnerships including the American Society of Human Genetics. We focused our efforts on relentlessly practicing D&I in order to advance equity and belonging. We came together and invited everyone to start where they are and continue to work, appreciating that there is always more to learn. We established a DEI governance, expanded the ERG program, connected our DEI strategy to each CSR focus area, and improved our representation statistics across a variety of measurements.
Diversity Council
We engaged executives across the enterprise to lead DEI projects that influence our business including Diversity of Genomic Datasets, Supplier Diversity, ERG Development, and Crisis Management.
Employee Resource Groups (ERG)
Through our robust ERG program, we achieved remarkable growth from 6 US-based ERGs to a global network of 17. Each ERG made a significant impact by incorporating business and social projects, benefiting our organization and communities alike. Our accomplishments included expanding honorifics in client contact systems, increasing recognition for women inventors from 25% to 40%, promoting STEM outreach to over 250 children in underrepresented communities, and providing career mentoring for transitioning veterans through our partnership with Biocom California. These efforts exemplify our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, driving positive change on multiple fronts.
Expanded Reporting and Transparency
In 2021, we took a significant step by transparently reporting our demographics in our annual CSR report, showcasing our commitment to driving change. Our efforts led to notable progress: a 2% increase in gender representation in global leadership, a 3% increase in underrepresented groups in US leadership, a 9% increase in minority representation in US executive leadership, a growth from 1% to 3% in LGBTQ+ representation (US), and a rise from 3% to 4% in disability representation (US). These achievements highlight our dedication to fostering a diverse and inclusive organization that values all individuals.
DEI Learning and Development
We were thrilled by the response to our learning programs, which have provided valuable support and growth opportunities. Here’s a summary of our achievements: 360 employees joined our Global Ambassador program, 330 participated in Psychological Safety training, 850 embraced Globe Smart for cross-cultural collaboration, over 2,000 engaged in Fundamentals of Strengths training, and our Bright Minds program empowered a select group of leaders. Our employees’ active involvement showcases our collective commitment to inclusivity and continuous growth.
At the heart of our strategy was the integration of the concept of “practice” into our culture. We believed that by actively exploring ourselves and sharing knowledge with one another, we could uncover areas for improvement. Embracing the practice mindset allowed us the freedom to make mistakes, learn from them, and ultimately find the right path to success.
As I step away from my role at Illumina, I carry with me the incredible journey we embarked upon together. The accomplishments we achieved and the strides we made in diversity, equity, and inclusion fill me with immense pride. The dedication and passion displayed by each individual illuminated the path towards a more inclusive future, and I am grateful for the collective efforts that have left an indelible mark.
It is important to acknowledge all of the great partners who have engaged with me on this journey. You helped me share the Illumina story and we made discoveries of our own. Thank you for the trust, confidence and partnership. As I move forward, I carry a strong belief in the power of continuous practice and learning. Change is inevitable, and we must always strive to stay ahead of the curve. It is crucial to remember the progress we have already made, while acknowledging that there is still more work to be done. The mission to unlock the power of the genome and enhance human health for everyone remains of utmost importance. It is a mission that encompasses the true meaning of inclusivity, where every individual is valued and their contributions are vital to our collective success. Together, we can and will make a difference.
While the path has taken an unexpected turn, I look ahead with optimism and a desire to find an opportunity where I can continue leading the charge in DEI for an organization that is deeply committed to creating and driving cultural change. I am excited to continue the transformative work and create a lasting impact in the lives of individuals and communities. Together, let us forge ahead, hand in hand, towards a future where diversity, equity, and inclusion are not only celebrated but ingrained in the very fabric of our society.
